Amino acids are used by the body to build proteins. Proteins are essential for the formation of cells. They are also involved in the structure of hormones, enzymes, neurotransmitters and antibodies.
Amino acids can be either essential or non-essential. Essential amino acids are not produced naturally in the body and must be obtained by diet or supplements. Whereas, non-essential amino acids can be synthesised in the body and are, therefore, not classed as essential.
